Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCov)

12th February 2020

By now I’m sure you have heard of the Novel Coronavirus. But what is it, what are the symptoms, and should we be concerned?

What is a Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are types of viruses that typically affect the respiratory tract. They are associated with the common cold, pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and can also affect the gut.
The 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCov) is a new strain of the coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China.

What are the symptoms?

Whilst symptoms can vary between people, confirmed cases have so far presented with:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

Symptoms can take 2-14 days after exposure to appear.
No vaccine is currently available for the 2019-nCov, but scientists have been able to replicate the virus, meaning that it can be tested for.

Should I be concerned?

As of the morning of Wednesday 12th February, 15 cases of 2019-nCov have been confirmed in Australia – 5 in QLD, 4 in NSW, 4 in Vic and 2 in SA.
All confirmed cases in Australia have come from the Wuhan district or have had close contact with someone who has.
Of the above reported cases, 5 have recovered and the rest are in a stable condition.
The Australian Government remains vigilant about this virus and has put in place numerous arrangements to keep travellers and residents safe.

How do I protect myself and my family?

As with maintaining your health and that of those around you, ensure that you regularly wash your hands, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and stay home from work/school/shopping if you are feeling unwell.
If you have been in contact with someone who has been in China within the last 14 days, book an appointment with your local GP to have a check-up.

If you would like any more information or have concerns, you can call the Coronavirus Health Information Line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1800 020 080 Or book an appointment with your GP.
